Hey everybody! Intermediate keeper (had 2× 10G tanks growing up) setting up a 20G Long tank— goal is to buy a bluegill fry (or some kind of SE US sunfish species) and add him in with a few fathead minnows to create a native style tank.

TL;DR: Is my tank ready faster than average, when should I add minnows, and where can I order bluegill/sunfish.

Setup Details (Oct 26–28): On the 26th, I bought the Aqueon 20G long, 20 lb CaribSea Sunset Gold sand, and accessories. Thoroughly rinsed the sand over and over, then split it between a 5-gal bucket and the cleaned tank. Covered both with ~2 inches of water (stand hadn’t arrived), added G-Juice bait/livewell treatment (safe like Stress Coat+), and split the included liquid bacteria packet that came with the sand. Stirred gently, placed Anubias and Java fern in the tank water, and let them sit a couple days.

The 27th: Added a 3-ft piece of hornwort + 3–4 tiny ramshorn snails (hitchhikers). Moved water gently 2x/day. Used Cascade 12-bulb LED plant light (620 nm red + 460 nm blue) a few hours daily.

The 28th: Stand arrived! Assembled, placed tank, added ALL sand, planted Java fern (~7") and Anubias (~6") in the back-right corner. Wrapped hornwort to hold them in place across the right side. Added java moss pyramid (PetSmart, 3 PVC pipes) in front-left, opposite of the filter in the back left. Wove hornwort pieces into the moss strings.

Bait Cooler Context: Java moss pyramid spent 4 days in my 19 qt Engel bait cooler (running 3 weeks with fathead minnows — daily changes, ice bags to 54–60 °F, G-Juice).

Filled tank with Stress Coat+ treated water. Light on ~7 hrs, then rest. Added ⅛ tsp TetraMin granules. Pump running since sand settled.

Cycle Progress (Oct 29–31):

29th: API liquid Ammonia test kit: 0–0.25 ppm ammonia. 5-in-1 strips: ~0.2–0.5 nitrite, 0 nitrate. Added 2 smallest fatheads (½ hr acclimation). They devoured food. Used gravel siphon to remove ~90 % excess soggy granules. Later test: same parameters, pH 7.5.
•	30th: Tank ~90 % clear. Morning: 7.5 pH, ~0.25 ammonia, 0.3–0.5 nitrite, 0 nitrate. Added bluegill fry + 11 small ghost shrimp (they cleaned scraps). Planted 3 bunches Mini Dwarf Hairgrass (split into 5–15 strand clumps).
•	31st (Day 5): Ammonia 0–0.25 ppm, nitrite 0.1–0.2 ppm, nitrate trace (maybe 0.1), pH 7.0. Added filter floss pad behind cartridge, directed outflow into it — flow slower but water clearing fast. NO water changes besides ~30% after adding minnows, to siphon excess food off the bottom.

Questions:

Is it possible that my tank is actually cycling faster than average with the variables I added? I have researched a lot and heard conflicting info at fish stores and online. I plugged ALL my parameters into Grok and Google. Both seem to support a possible early cycle, with careful monitoring, especially with being a planted tank with added bacteria early on.

When should I add more fatheads, and how many max?

Where can you order bluegill online, or other recommended sunfish? I hear green sunnies grow a little smaller and might be more suited to start out in my 20G.

Thanks for any info!
