Part of Natlan's Plot was Moved to Fontaine

Theory & Lore

After seeing the Paris Expo concept art of Iansan I’ve been thinking, what if Fontaine’s plot of returning the elemental authority to the dragon was originally supposed to happen in Natlan?

  • Iansan’s original design leaned towards Pyro elements
  • Gosoythoth’s line about Iansan’s hidden potential
  • How much of a big deal was made about the Pyro Archon not being selected by Celestia but instead through the Pilgrimage. Only for this plot line to go absolutely nowhere.
  • Mavuika’s sacrifice that quite frankly, got diverted by a bit of an ass pull
  • It's a little strange that for how involved dragons are in Natlan's lore, that dragons were barely touched upon in the AQ at all.

I propose the original concept was Iansan was originally the first character we meet in Natlan, and that she was the reincarnated Dragon Sovereign of Pyro. From here she largely follows Kachina’s story beats. Natlan proceeds largely the same until we fight the Abyss. Here we actually confront Gosoythoth, Mavuika uses Ronova’s power to defeat Gosoythoth, then Mavuika dies as the price for using that power.

Then the next AQ is about the Pilgrimage of the Return of the Sacred Flame where Iansan demonstrates her character growth and wins, getting the position of the Pyro Archon.

Not only does this tie together several hanging plot threads in Natlan, but it also wonderfully hits all the shounen beats Natlan was going for.

  • Weak protagonist that has hidden power
  • Protagonist going through growth where they learn to harness that hidden power
  • Underdog protagonist rising up to become the leader of their village nation.
