Feeling like I’m forcing a friendship after my friend moved am I overthinking this or should I step back?
I’d really appreciate some perspective on a friendship situation that’s been weighing on me.
I have a friend who moved to another country I stay in the next country close to her a little while ago, and since then our communication has changed a lot. Before she moved, we talked normally and the friendship felt mutual. After she moved, she started responding with very short replies, often hours later, and without any warmth or engagement. It slowly began to feel one sided, like I was the one holding the friendship together.
Recently we had a conversation about something simple I had bought something because I thought she wanted it maybe she thinks I ate her money but I even pitched in my money she paid me back half of what she was supposed too. She replied hours later with just one word: “K.” And she left me on read it’s coming to a month I see her online on all platforms
No follow up, no thank you, no emotion. Just dry. I know text isn’t everything, but it stung because I put effort and care into my message. And this isn’t the first time she did the same thing before, and I was the one who reaches out always when she goes silent.
Now I feel awkward reaching out. I don’t want to chase anyone to be in my life, especially when I’m consistently met with cold or distant responses. At the same time, I don’t want to assume the worst or cut someone off if it’s just a misunderstanding or life stress.
I guess I’m struggling with: Is it fair to address this with her if she eventually reaches out again? Or should I quietly step back and match her energy? How do you know when you’re forcing a friendship vs. just going through a distant phase?
I genuinely care about her and I don’t want drama I just don’t want to feel like I’m imposing myself in someone’s life.
What would you do in my place?
Thanks in advance for any advice.
