How do Buy 3 get 3 work? And other deals?

This is probably a dumb question but I have a hard time understanding what counts as buy 3 get 3 and how many exact products you need?? Is there a price limit to those? Also, how do you explain to customers that the prices are spread out and not going to show up as 0.00 for the sales?
