GWG L Bonds Investors Offered Just 3 Cents on the Dollar in $50.5M Beneficient Settlement
A major development has emerged in the GWG Holdings bankruptcy, as spin-off company Beneficient proposed a $50.5 million settlement for investors. This offer, however, represents a tiny fraction of the $1.6 billion in L Bonds sold to investors, which are now largely worthless following GWG’s 2022 Chapter 11 filing.
Here’s what the proposal details:
- Total Settlement: $50.5 million, funded entirely by Beneficient's insurance policies.
- Affected Investors: Holders of allowed claims of the $1.6 billion in GWG L Bonds.
- Expected Payout: Approximately $31.48 per $1,000 bond—just over three cents on the dollar.
- Status: The offer is pending approval from federal judges in Texas.
While Beneficient stated the settlement resolves claims against it without admitting wrongdoing, the payout shows the massive gap between investor losses and available recovery. The GWG Litigation Trust is also still pursuing claims against former GWG executives for "corporate looting."
This settlement does little to cover the devastating losses. It serves as a reminder of the massive risks when complex, illiquid investments are marketed by broker-dealers as secure, income-producing products.
