What do you think was the path to avoiding a ZANU one party state in Zimbabwe? (besides Rhodesia)

The most common defense of Rhodesia both at the time of its existence and now looking back is that any one party state led by Mugabe, Nkomo, or any Pan-Africanist militant socialist would be doomed to fail, and that criticism is pretty much objectively correct.

However, since minority rule isn't an acceptable system either, what do you think was the answer to Zimbabwe not becoming a failed state? A world with no Marxist-Leninist Zimbabwe or minority rule Rhodesia.
