For a behavior to be considered self-harm, does in matter if the person is doing that with the intent of hurting themselves or not?

I asked in r/trichotillomania if the behaviors of the illness are self-harm or not, and the responses were pretty mixed. So, if there is a psychologist seeing this, please answer
