I posted a year ago about my Pokemon deal finder site - I've improved it a lot since then and would love your thoughts

Discussion

Hi everyone,

I posted a year ago about the Pokemon deal finder site I made. It finds deals on Pokemon cards on eBay by comparing the listing price to the historical value from Pricecharting.

I've been working on the site since then and have made a lot of big improvements to the site. I wanted to share the site since it's come a long way since I first posted it.

Big changes in the last year:

Manual exclusion of listings and sellers

This was by far the biggest improvement I made to the quality of the site. I added buttons that allowed me to ban sellers and exclude listings, and started banning sellers who sold obviously fake or mislabelled cards. The site went from having a lot of mislabelled and fake listings to being almost completely correctly identified cards after this.

PSA graded cards

When I first made the site, I included graded cards and detected the grade by just checking the title for "PSA 9" or "PSA 10". This led to a lot of inaccuracies as people would constantly use "PSA 10" or "Potential PSA 10" for ungraded cards, or "PSA 10" for a PSA 9 card, and lots of other mislabellings. I took graded cards off the site for a while because they were just too inaccurate.

Then a few months later I decided to add graded cards but with an automated OCR check to make sure the card was actually a PSA 9 or PSA 10. I made a script that detects the PSA label in an image and checks for the text "MINT" or "GEM MT" to see if it's graded. This worked perfectly and allowed me to add PSA graded cards back to the site.

There are now a good amount of PSA grade 9 and 10 cards on the site, and they're all identified accurately.

Sort by auction end time

You can now sort listings by auction end time ("Auctions ending soonest" link on the main page) to see items ending soon that are underpriced. I've seen some highly underpriced cards ending in a few minutes using this page.

Booster packs, booster boxes, and ETBs

I also had problems with boosters and ETBs on the site. People would often list opened ETBs and booster boxes as new, and it had issues identifying non-Pokemon booster boxes, such as mistaking Yugioh Legendary Collection for Pokemon Legendary Collection. I've since added some heavy filters to the booster box and ETB code and the ones on the site should be pretty well identified now.

General improvements

  • Saved searches and listings: You can now save searches and listings for future reference.

  • Reference images: You can now click on any image on the results page to see the full size image with a reference image to confirm it's the correct card.

  • More sets: I've expanded the sets included on the site and added the most recent sets.

  • More search options

  • General accuracy improvements
