First time I tried letting myself bored, it was amazing

Technique

I saw this technique mentioned in this sub and decided to give it a shot, and honestly, I felt amazing.

I’m a software engineer and an entrepreneur. I failed my last startup, and I’ve been a bit depressed since then, trying to come up with my next idea.

Normally, I work a lot. And when I’m not working, I watch coding videos because it feels more productive than scrolling through reels (which might be true), but in the end, it’s still a distraction, especially since I actually enjoy watching people code.

So today, I turned off my computer and phone, sat at my desk, and did absolutely nothing for about 60–70 minutes. No music, no writing down thoughts. just sitting there, letting myself get bored and allowing ideas to run through my head.

And it worked. I got so many ideas, don’t get me wrong, most of them were useless at best, but they came, and they wouldn’t have otherwise. I liked it so much that about five hours later, I did another 40-minute “do-nothing” session.

It’s only my first day, but I’m really loving it. Is this an actual thing? Do we have any real studies on this? If so, could someone share a link? Or am I just getting placebo’d here?

Any recommendations on this technique are also very welcome.

P.S. It’s pretty late here, so I’m heading to bed but I’ll reply to everyone in the morning. Thanks in advance!
