Miso soup help

I know miso soup is considered simple but I cant find consistent information... I want to make it but dont know exactly what I need so...

Do I use red miso or white miso? Whats the cheat for dashi? I dont really want to buy a bunch of ingredients I dont have another use for or cant use before they go bad...
