Help me reconcile D&C 124:49 and 1 Ne 3:7

Insights from the Scriptures

..as they appear to be in direct conflict with each other. The first comes from D&C 124 from this week’s study in Come Follow Me.

D&C 124:49

Verily, verily, I say unto you, that when I give a commandment to any of the sons of men to do a work unto my name, and those sons of men go with all their might and with all they have to perform that work, and cease not their diligence, and their enemies come upon them and hinder them from performing that work, behold, it behooveth me to require that work no more at the hands of those sons of men, but to accept of their offerings.

I understand this to mean God is not overly demanding of us, that He judges not based on the outcome per se, but based on our having given our best effort. Sometimes the outcome just isn’t possible.

But wait! What about Nephi and his instruction to retrieve the plates of brass from Laban?

1 Nephi 3:7

And it came to pass that I, Nephi, said unto my father: I will go and do the things which the Lord hath commanded, for I know that the Lord giveth no commandments unto the children of men, save he shall prepare a way for them that they may accomplish the thing which he commandeth them.

When I read it in Nephi, it sounds like a general—even universal—principle. But the passage in D&C seems to suggest that’s not how it works at all.

How can I understand and reconcile these verses with some form of consistency?
