Confused about Rob Reiner's career arc

How is it that Rob Reiner ripped off a streak of some of the best movies ever made and often single best movie of it's kind from 1984-1992 with the biggest stars in the world and then just....duds. Absolutely nothing of note in the last 30 years. My questions are:

1. Why hasn't he been able to make a good movie in the last 30 years despite continuing to work with high profile stars?
2. Why is he seemingly still well respected in the industry and not seen as a has been/ failure?
