Steampunk Rome: What if the Empire never fell?

Discussion

What if the Roman Empire never collapsed? Do you think discovering gunpowder, the steam engine, and the railroad would’ve changed its fate?

I’ve always loved the idea of a Victorian-style, industrial Roman Empire — basically a steampunk Rome ruling over most of the known world.

Where do you think its borders would’ve ended? India? China? Maybe even the Americas?

What really fascinates me is imagining two versions of Rome existing at the same time:

one, the classic slave-based empire focused on agriculture and mining,

and another, an industrial Rome with huge factories, patrons, and workers.

Would they have managed to coexist peacefully? Or would they have torn themselves apart — like the U.S. North and South did during the Civil War?

💭 What do you think — could Rome have industrialized without losing what made it “Roman”?

💭 Would you live in that Rome?
