2000 Ford Ranger 4WD axle

The front diff sits closer to driver side, so when I removed the axle, there was an extension (driveshaft?) connected. I swapped it onto the new axle and tried to re-insert it into the diff but its sticking. Am I doing something wrong, or do I just need to give it extra force to slide in? I made sure the splines are lining up.
