Leaders ignoring responsabilities
Hello,
Making this post with hope i'll be somewhat enlightned about life in general.
I work for a GC for few years and i started to notice some pattern in the leadership behavior, when it comes to helping solving problems and take the responsibility their position comes with. I see an unhealthy amount of handling most aspects of the job very lightly, without analysing or having any critical thinking about the situation. We are talking about awarding hundreads of thousand of euros of work to a company for exemple, without negotiating conditions, scope, etc.. Their stance isnt honest most of the time, for exemple, when you tell them what you negotiated and the underlying conditions, they give their ok, without much discussion on the topic obvisouly, but as things go off track in the project, they start to ask about relevant topics and question every decision, things that should be discussed months before, or even worst, things that we talked about, they agreed, but since they are the ones beeing cornered now, they develop "selective memory" and shift into a more agressive stance and threatning mode.
The company has a high level of rotation and the results have never been very good (although the holding company is in a very very good financial situation), but still, nothing changes. The company marketing however is amazing, top tier really. And we keep getting projects, many time incorrectly estimated, and less people to manage them or very inexperienced people without any kind of tutoring.
I cant wrap my head around what is the end goal here... they keep delivering negative results but dont change the attitude or try to improve or implement best practices.. How can they handle things like this, is there something im not seeing here, is this a situation of "the whole world is incompetent and thats how life is", am i too soft and expect things to be more professionaly adressed than they really are? Does the company have a mission i cannot grasp and we are all pawns in a chess board? Maybe this is all high level risk control, but what i cant understand is how you sleep at night knowing that, if the PM leaves the project, all the problems of that project will be yours to deal with.
Just putting this out there, your insights and experience are valuable, hoping that i can better understand how a company is/can be managed.
