When are you meant to figure out how the golden pads work?

I know how they work as I was spoiled, but I never found any instruction book pages talking about praying at them. I've been trying to avoid using them until I was explicitly told about them, but it looks like you're not able to exit the Hidden Vault without using one.

Was I meant to find this out way earlier? When?
