Why does everyone dog on Sam over ACCIDENTALLY hitting a dog with his car? [pun intended]

It's confused me since I first watched the show. Rewatching now with my gf who's since fallen in love with the show through me and it's been bugging me all last week.

Everyone, and I mean everyone, he mentions it to seems to twist it into making out that he intended on hitting the dog, treating him like a bad person and just generally give him shit for it. Not to mention Amelia who flies off the deep end every time he opens his mouth or breathes.

I'm so genuinely confused by this. Was there a later explanation I missed that irons out why they all treat him like that? I half expected to learn they were all possessed by demons lol!

Like fr, am I missing something here?
