Found a rat in my house
Hello! Yesterday I was rearranging our spare room and in the corner I saw something move. Honestly I thought it was a snake (we live In Australia) and stopped immediately, waiting for my wife to get home and check. They got home and found that it was a rat…. Which to me is 1000% worse - I love pet rats and always had mice growing up, but just have a thing about infestations, so a wild rat is incredibly triggering for me. I immediately went to the store and got a humane trap (and a classic trap for if it didn’t work the first night) as it appeared to just be one rat and we continued clearing up the room. More poos and wees appeared as we worked on the room but then I had the suspicion that the rat was no longer in there… which caused me to clean the entire room out to try and see… and I was right, no rat. We put the cage out with some peanut butter and banana and this morning as soon as I woke up I went and checked it…. No rat but the bait was gone!! So essentially we’ve just fed the rat. There were more poos and wees in our lounge room now (not many) and some smaller poos too. Anyway I’m triggered AS FUCK. I have two essays due for uni on Friday and I am not able to focus at all because I can’t stop obsessing over this, I feel soooooo unsafe and disgusted. I’ve contacted an exterminator which also brings up complex feelings as I’m a freaking vegan and don’t want the rats to be harmed but can’t handle living like this. I’m venting but any advice on rats or whatever is welcome. When my wife gets home from work I’m going to head to the library to try and work on my assignments but HOLY HELL!! Also just feel like all I can smell is rat and I’m trying to hard not to do all my compulsions.
