Indian men around Females

I'm hoping to get some clarity on this and how factual what my classmates/friends have been doing. So I go to a university and have made relationships with a couple of indian dudes who are pretty chill. Most of them have grown up where I am but were born in India, some of them just moved for Uni.

What I've noticed is that despite them being 21-22 years old alot of them still go after girls in high school. When asking why they said that the laws regarding the topics are bs and that it shouldnt matter what age they are but rather if the relationship is a "fit or not". I understand some of it but i feel that if there's an age gap isn't there an inharent discourse there. They said that if someone 18 can date someone 30 why cant a 22 year old date a 16 year old. They said that making a big deal about minors and underage and what not is a very western thing and isn't a big thing in india.

Is this technically true or is it just some bs they went on to
