Advice for completing I-130 forms/application for spouse
My husband (Canadian, living in Canada) and I (US Citizen, living in US) married in Oct 2025 and are in the process of applying for a spousal visa this month (Nov 2025). We did some consultation with attorneys and colleagues who went through their own application processes and have decided to save the $5K-7K and file ourselves. I've been reviewing a lot of advice here and comparing to what both attorneys and our colleagues have said.
Some background - we've been together for over 3.5 years. I regularly travel to Canada, visiting him nearly monthly. We've traveled abroad together to Mexico, Europe, and soon--Thailand for our honeymoon. We've spent every single holiday together and with each other's families. We don't have much for comingled finances because we live separately, but I've purchased majority of his plane tickets to visit and travel because my income is larger and I have a lot of airline miles. After our marriage, I added him as a authorized user on one of my credit cards and a few months ago, I added him as one of the beneficiaries to my work-provided life insurance. He's also my emergency contact for a variety of accounts.
Ok so my questions:
-
I'm so nervous of accidentally filing out something in this form incorrectly. The directions say to write "N/A" or "None" for fields that aren't applicable to you. So is this every single field -- like for additional employment or family members do I fill this in for each related field (addresses, city, etc). What about when it won't allow me to write a "/"? Do I write "NA" or "Not applicable." I might be overthinking this, but I've heard horror stories about innocent mistakes messing up an application.
-
Are there any other "tips" for this form that someone should know? What might I accidentally mess up?
-
The lawyers and colleagues we spoke with thought we'd be fine with a few letters/affidavits from friends and family, and maybe a photo album, but I've seen people here say they provided 1000s of photos and pages of text messages. What realistically is the balance needed here? I don't want to provide our text messages, but I have many lovely cards from him I can take photos of.
-
Do I need to be worried about the minimal comingled finances or will the agents understand its hard to comingle when you aren't living in the same country together? (i.e. can't sign a lease together until we move to the same country together!).
-
My husband is currently unemployed (recently laid off), which is fine because he has some work on the horizon that will carry him until he can move here. But is this going to be a "knock" against him? Or does it not matter because me, the petitioner, is fully employed and we are simply being truthful in the application?

What else am I missing?
Thanks!!!
