The popularity of drake

discussion

Whenever I look at most music subs, I feel like Drake was never liked or popular in the first place. But if you look into his discography, its basically the opposite. Drake's career started in 2009, with the no2 hit, best I ever had, from his mixtape that got him into the mainstream, So Far Gone, and forever(featuring eminem, kanye, and lil wayne). Best I ever had is officialy diamond, while forever is still awaiting certification. Then drake dropped his debut album, thank me later, which debuted at no1 on the billboard 200 to 447,000 copies. The album is less known and less talked about in his discography, than his other albums. A year later, drake dropped what is probably(imo) his magnum opus, Take care. It sold 631,000 copies first week, debuting at no1, and is his only album to be certified diamond. The album features hits such as Marvin's room, Headlines, Take care, and The motto. Headlines and The motto are now both certified diamond, while Marvin's room is still awaiting certification. 2 years later, drake dropped another great project, Nothing was the same, which sold 658,000 copies and is certified 7x platinum. The album features hits such as Hold on we're going home and Started from the bottom, with Hold on we're going home being officialy certified diamond, while Started from the bottom is awaiting certification. Another 2 years, Drake drops If you're reading this its too late, without any promotion beforehand, selling 535k first week. This is probably the biggest proof that drake once was respected and also admired as an artist, and it was because of building trust in his audience of dropping good projects repeatedly(NWTS and Take care). The album had only one single(Energy), and there weren't any huge standout songs from the albums, like before, but the album was still heavily acclaimed and is considered drake's best project by most fans and is heavily certified(5x platinum). IYRTITL also help fuel more anticipation for his next album. The same year, he dropped Hotline bling which peaked at no2 on the billboard hot 100. The music video of the song now has around 2b views on youtube, and is very memefied. A year later he dropped one dance, which peaked at no1 on the billboard hot 100 for 10 weeks. One dance is still his most streamed song to date, and the song getting the most daily streams. both One dance and Hotline Bling were singles for his 2016 album Views. Views was met with mixed reviews by critics and fans, with many people claiming this was the start of his downfall, but the album sold 1 million copies first week and is still very popular to this day, being certified 9x platinum. A year later he dropped More Life which had his lowest first week sales(505k) since Thank me later. The album was still very popular, featuring one of his biggest songs, Passionfruit, which is officially certified diamond. A year later he dropped Scorpion, which is maybe one of his worst albums to date, but one of his biggest too. Scorpion has the most no1 hits for any rap album ever and is tied with GNX and For all the dogs for top 10 hits. The album sold 732,000 copies first week, but had the lowest pure first week sales of his career at the time. The album also was controversial because the album was the only thing on spotify's front page for a day. The album features hits such as God's plan, Nice for what, In my feelings, and Nonstop, with Nonstop, Nice for What, and God's plan being certified diamond. The music video for God's plan has surpassed 1b views on spotify. Scorpion is certified 7x platinum. The same year, the hit song sicko mode released which also went no1.His last album to sell over 500,000 copies was Certified lover boy with 613,000 copies. The album features hit songs way 2 sexy, fair trade, knife talk, and girls want girls. This album was the start of his downfall, as it was another bad album like scorpion and was starting to lose the trust he built from take care, nothing was the same, and if you're reading this its too late. His later albums have failed to sell over thank me later numbers, but are still successful for the streaming era. his peak in my opinion was 2011-2021, and this era of his were most of his streams are coming from nowadays. The stats prove that drake was not only popular but also well liked at his peak(2011-2021).
