Alshenex' Familiars and AOE damage

This question is a quick one: has anyone found a way to make familiars immune to allied aoe damage? There are so many cool ways to gain familiars, and alshenex' are specifically made to work with iron spells. However I find there is absolutely no way to use these familiars without them either immediately dying from my own spells (stuff like chain lightning even straight up jumps to them)

I am wondering if there is any way to actually use familiars comfortably without the game wanting me to forsake all spells that are not just point click single target stuff
