CT Car Tax/DMV question

In early September 2021, my dealership took back the car after buying out my loan from Westlake Financial. They told me it was a repossession, but I recently found out it wasn’t — they just bought the loan back and took the car.

At the time, the dealership wouldn’t give me any car information (like the plate number or registration), so I couldn’t cancel the plates myself.

The DMV record now shows registration disposition 10/30/2021 and expiration 6/30/2024, because the dealership resold the car to someone else at that time. Because the plates were still active in their system, my town is billing me for the 2022–2023 tax year (01/2022–01/2023) even though I no longer had the car after September 2021.

I have an email from the dealership confirming they took the car on 9/2/2021, but they say they have no other documentation due to how long ago it was. Westlake said they can’t provide anything either since the loan was paid off by the dealership. The town won’t adjust the bill without a repossession or deficiency letter — which doesn’t exist.

I haven’t spoken to the town yet to clarify that it wasn’t actually a repossession, so I’m looking for advice on how best to explain this and what documentation they might accept.

Also, does anyone know how to get the DMV to update the registration date so the tax office will fix the bill if I’m not able to get documentation they will accept?
