Someday I’ll Love Copenhagen

Copenhagen -
forgive me for leaving you so often.
For choosing silence over company,
and calling it survival.

I will learn the names of the streets not by their signs,
but by how they sound when it rains.
Vesterbro, Frederiksberg -
each with its smell of rain and heat,
each one a pulse I mistook for home.

Someday, I’ll stand at Islands Brygge
watching boys dive into grey water.
I no longer envy them.
I remember that I, too,
once threw myself at the world
just to feel the cold.

Someday, I’ll look up at the cranes
over Nordhavn and see not construction,
but continuation.
Not the skyline,
but something inside me
still building.

Copenhagen -
I will stop mistaking stillness for loss.
I will walk through Nørreport
without bracing for departure.
When I catch my reflection
in the dark of a passing train,
I will smile - briefly.

Note: Ocean Vuong’s structure from “Someday I’ll Love Ocean Vuong” has partly inspired this - it is not a coincidence.
