Coworker avoids eye contact and never speaks to me — did I do something wrong?

Lately I have been trying to make sense of a weird situation at work. There’s this coworker who, for reasons I genuinely don’t understand, seems to go out of his way not to talk to me or even look at me. If I ask him a work question, I can literally see his eyes avoiding mine like he’s determined to focus on anything else. He only ever looks at me when I’m not looking at him and I know it sounds crazy, but I’m not crazy.

For context, I’ve worked with him for almost seven months. In all that time, he’s never said hi to me (even though he says it to everyone else). I’m not saying I want him to say hi, but it just makes me feel like I’ve done something wrong.

I should also mention that I’ve been told I have a bit of a mean RBF and that I’m quiet – both true. I’m extremely introverted. It’s a blessing and a curse because I can stay quiet for hours, not because I’m upset, but because that’s just my nature. At this job, though, I’ve had to force myself to be extroverted to the point where some coworkers actually think I am one. Which is funny because my best friend thinks I’m taking the piss whenever I tell her that. I’m not a boring person though, I’m actually very funny and enjoyable to be around (at least with the right people).

Recently, whilst I was trying to talk to him about something work-related, it got even weirder. It’s hard to explain, but he wouldn’t look me in the eyes. I kept my gaze on him, but his eyes kept darting everywhere: the ceiling, the shelves, literally anywhere except me. Not in a flirty way or anything, just like he was uncomfortable or didn’t know where to look.

I also might have made things worse by reaching out to him once to ask if I’d done something wrong. I just wanted clarity, you know? He replied saying “nah” and that he was sorry if he made me feel that way. I didn’t respond because I didn’t know what else to say. I appreciated the apology, but it didn’t feel genuine, it just felt… polite. Since then, it’s been really awkward, not hostile, just filled with this odd tension, like shyness and anxiety rolled together.

And I’ll admit, after I noticed he started ignoring me, I began to fancy him a little (please don’t come for me, I’m trying to get over him). I think it was partly because of the mystery of it all. But I’m doing my best to move on, and I have zero plans to pursue anything.

Anyway, I just wanted to know if anyone’s ever experienced something like this: a coworker who seems to go out of their way to avoid looking at you or talking to you. Is there any way to figure out what you did wrong without making things more awkward?
