Should I graduate college? Which path should I take?
So, I went to a Bible college (it was cheap). I went for a double major in Bible Theology (everyone gets this) and Intercultural Studies (I enjoy learning about different cultures, traveling, and many other things so I thought this would be good). I wasnt planning on going to college but COVID happened and the plan I had failed for many reasons (health issues and because of lockdowns and such) so this was the second option.
The Intercultural Studies degree required a semester internship in a country where you don’t speak the language so you can learn the language and live there. You write papers before going and papers after going.
Because of my health issues (epilepsy) it wasn’t really possible for me to go overseas since no one would really take me and I was a risk. I talked to my professor and he agreed that I could work at a specific Latin cafe run by a Latin woman and had other Latinos working at it. I knew the woman so it was easy to get this job. I worked as a barista there, becoming friends with the workers, meeting locals, living on my own… during this time I was also trying to plan my (now) husband and I’s wedding, touring apartments, getting an apartment, stressing over his visa (he just had to make it difficult and be Canadian and not from some other country 😅😂), and lots of other stuff. I was only getting paid 1 day out of the 4 days I worked since it was an internship.
Unfortunately, I didnt get my papers turned in and failed my internship. Probably the first person at that school to fail that internship… I talked to our schools Dean who was weirdly shocked to learn what my internship was and said stuff about “why are you in this degree if you cant go overseas?” “Are you and husband planning on going overseas in the future?” “You should think about changing degrees.” And then said to talk to my professor about my options… my professor sent back an email basically saying I wouldnt be able to do my internship the same because the internship is: “a test of your ability to work and live independently, to show personal rigor and to accomplish goals. Your previous internship did not produce those outcomes.” He also said things like: “It requires 3 hours of language learning.... this is not trying to pick up some Spanish in the kitchen” and comments on how he thinks that if I change my degree how I should take classes in person since I seem to “do better in a classroom setting.” I do not… which is why I failed the more academic side of the internship…
Anyway…
I cannot do the internship like they want me to right now. I could maybe do it in 2-4 years once my husband and I have more of a plan for our lives but right now we’re still working out his visa stuff, he has a good full time job, and im still working at the cafe full time now.
Switching degrees means I would probably have to work less in order to go to classes and also requires more money to pay for the classes… I also cant drive and the bus system is horrible and it’s too far to walk. There is a possibility for online classes but switching degrees could take a semester or more (most likely more) and none of them really interest me.
The easiest option would be to switch my degree to ANOTHER Bible Theology major and get two degrees in that… it would only require 3 classes which are most likely online…
I dont know what to do…
Im also getting discouraged by my cafe job but don’t know what else I could do… especially if my husband and I decide to move next year to a bigger city for his work.
I have 4 years of barista experience which includes customer service, Ive done some work with leading students on trips, housekeeping experience for 3 years. Worked at a winery labeling wine… idk… Im not a very outgoing person and enjoy jobs that I can just shut my brain off and do… I was thinking about applying to the library but Im unsure as I cant hold much information in my brain and can’t remember things unless I do them a lot…
Which path should I take?
