Sister in-law stormed out of our wedding and went home.
Story time!! A little background, my ex husband os the middle child of five and the only boy. His one sister has a short fuse and is always trying to be the absolute center of attention. We will call her Karen. Everytime my ex and I had an argument she would say I was controlling and that he could do better.
Karen always bragged about being a paramedic, that she donated to charities and doing everything better than everyone else. She even tried to have her nieces and nephews from the other sister live with her because she had more money. She got angry with her sister and made up a story about her and called CPS. She sreamed at the kids and went no contact when they said no they didn't want to live with her.
My ex and I had decided to have a baby before we got married. When I got pregnant not long after, his sister started telling my ex that he was making a huge mistake and that she didn't think I was the right one. Keep in mind, Iet her once. His response was oh that's just Karen being Karen. Within 2 months, she was also pregnant. She was in an on and off again relationship in which ahe qould throw a fit, break up with him and get back together when he started to move on.
When I had our daughter, she showed up with her father, my ex's stepfather to visit the new baby. The whole time she bragged about all the high end things they had for their baby. She made it clear that ahe would make a better mother.
When my ex husband and I announced we were engaged his sister annouced she was engaged within a week. Things between her and I seemed ok until we set the date. I also took the attitude that it was just Karen being Karen because she's like that with everyone.
We set the date and she set her's two weeks before ours, knowing that his mother could only travel to one of our weddings from another province. In the end, his mother wasn't able to come either.
Leading up to our more traditional wedding, my ex asked if I could make Karen a bridesmaid. I was hesitant but I had listened to his point of view and that she was important to him and it would extend an olive branch.
I had made the bridesmaids dresses myself. I have a big family and we did a lot of things on our own to cut costs. We were blessed with eBay and crafty family friends. We had fitting parties with wine and cheese and we had a blast. Karen would purposely say she was coming and not show up. I had to take time off to fit hers and she would tell me that her wedding was going to be so much smaller and intimate... the way it should be.
My family threw a bridal shower and ahe ahowed up when everyone was leaving, dumping chocolate covered almonds in my lap, telling my mom she had gotten busy but at least ahe brought her food contribution. My mom called her a real peice of work and asked me why I kept her in the wedding party.
My ex and I worked together and lost our jobs. We decided to still go thru with it. We would have lost the deposits and it was mostly paid off. Our Stag and doe covered aome of what was owing (Karen didn't come to that either) and our friends and family helped either make things or contributed to make it happen. Our guests even offered to leave their kids at home to save us money for the price of the plates.
That is.. everyone but Karen.
It was a week away form Karen's wedding and she announced that not only was our daughter flower girl but I was maid of honor. She demanded me to buy a silver dress and a flower girl dress for my daughter. I told my ex that we couldn't afford it and he said he would just add it to the credit we had gotten, he didn't want her to make a scene at ours. I agreed.
The day of her wedding, I had dropped off her bridesmaid dress (she didn't have to pay for and I had hand beaded) She wanted me to curl her hair and rush to a bridal shop to pick up a rental dress, a grocery store for a dozen roses for her bouquet and a cake. On the way back she stopped the car. She turned to me and said "I told my brother not to marry you" i sat in silence repeating "its karen being karen" in my head. She then said rhat I wasn't as bad as she thought I was.
It turned out her best friend was angry she wasn't in the wedding party. She legitimately asked me to just to tell me that she didn't want me to marry her brother.
Fast forward to our wedding. The night before my ex was at the hotel for the night for his bachelor party. We had a tiny two bedroom place and all the girls were over for mine.. My bachelorette party was super simple at home deal with Rockband, drinks and silly hats. I asked the others not to invite her. Karen demanded that her father and his friend stay at our place.. the night before not knowing about the bachelorette and invited them herself to the wedding. I said no. She threw a fit and my ex and I calmed her down by allowing her son to the no kids wedding and got her a room at the hotel.
One of the gifts was from a family friend who did hair and makeup for the bridesmaids for $30 person (so cheap, i was so grateful) She refused to get her hair done and the flower fishnet hair piece (worn at the side like a mini veil) I had gotten from another family friend. She wore it like a scrunchie, I told her that it goes to the side and completely ignored her the rest of the day. My ex and I agreed that she wasn't allowed to say a speech.
At the end of the speeches she stormed out throwing her hair piece in the middle of the dance floor. She actually went home! We ended up getting our money back dor her room because another guest didn't mind taking it. She made a complete fool of herself and everyone else had a great time.
Years later, she is still complaining about the hair piece and Im happily divorced, still having a freind with a completely psycho sister.
