How to deal with a language barrier [CA]
I recently got hired at a new job. Being bilingual was NOT in the job description which is great because I don’t speak a lick of Spanish. For the foreseeable future I am supposed to shadow a coworker, not really do anything, just follow them around and watch. We barely speak, the majority of the time the staff with the exception of me and one other coworker speak Spanish to each other. So about 6/200 employees don’t speak Spanish. About 7 of my 8 hour shifts are standing around listening to coworkers chat in Spanish. I don’t really get to form relationships with people because of this. I asked HR if being bilingual was a requirement and they said no and asked why, I told them why and they said if they aren’t talking to you it’s not a problem. While I have no problem with people speaking another language I feel left out and like an outsider when it’s constantly Spanish. I keep getting asked if I speak Spanish and I say no, but it doesn’t stop. The break room at lunch I sit alone while everyone has seemingly excited conversations in a language I can’t speak, or in the halls tons of people are talking to each other. I’m not racist or against other languages, it just feels like Spanish should be a requirement if it is this present in the work space. What can I do? I’m doing Duolingo but I’ve only learned bread, milk, and genders.
