Three years of emotional whiplash with someone who may have BPD — I finally see the truth

BPD Behaviors & Traits

I (25F) wanted to share my story because reading others’ experiences has helped me start to make sense of mine.

I was in a relationship for nearly three years (October 2022-July 2025) with someone (M26) I now believe has undiagnosed Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD). For the first few months of our relationship, I was his FP — his “favorite person.” He was obsessed with me, adored me, and made me feel like I was his entire world. But once his breakdown happened in March 2023, everything began to unravel.

He told me he’d never abandon me. That if anything were wrong, we’d face it together. He said I was his “only safe space” and that I saved his life. But slowly that safety became control. He controlled where I walked, how I dressed, and whether I wore makeup. He told me my weight gain (20 pounds from medical issues) made me unattractive, yet got angry when I said I’d love him no matter what he looked like. He criticized my clothes and equated how I looked with how much I valued him. He used sex as a release, not connection — and when I was injured and couldn’t be intimate, he grew distant, cold, and disinterested. I felt used, confused, and terrified.

He was emotionally chaotic: jealous, paranoid, and self-loathing. He couldn’t sleep, looped thoughts for hours, and blamed the world for his pain. He raged during fights, then forgot what he said the next day. When I was laid off, his attraction vanished. When I struggled emotionally, he withdrew. Every time life got hard, I became the target.

He later admitted he had lied to me for two years, staying in the relationship not out of love, but because he “wanted to honor me” for supporting him through his breakdown. He said he was emotionally checked out since the summer of 2023 and that he was “too immature to be in a relationship.” He told me I was “too smart” for him — and that breaking up made him feel “light and free.” Hearing that from someone who once cried and said I was his home broke me.

He lived his life like a pendulum: impulsive spending, reckless driving, binge eating, overworking, then collapsing. He dreamed of becoming rich to prove himself, cycled through side hustles (dropshipping, copywriting, AI startups), and drowned in shame when they failed. He couldn’t hold jobs or friendships for long. He said he needed therapy, but I don’t think he ever faced the truth.

And then came the final discard — the most emotionally violent ending of all.

He broke up suddenly, leaving me in complete shock. A week later, he met up with me in person, cried, and said he still loved me. The next day he texted and FaceTimed me, framing the breakup as “a break for a few months” and scheduled a check-in three months later to reconnect. For months, I held onto that as a lifeline.

But when the day came, he sent a message saying he had lied — that he didn’t want to talk, wasn’t ready, and maybe we could connect “in a few months.” Then a day later, he changed again, offering to talk after all. When we spoke, he was detached and cold, saying he “feels free” and wants nothing to do with me romantically ever again. He said he has years of therapy ahead of him and maybe we could be “friends in a year or two.”

It felt like psychological whiplash — a full-circle repetition of every cycle we ever lived through: idealization, devaluation, discard. I now know it was never real stability — it was trauma bonding and emotional dependency, disguised as love.

I share this because I know how disorienting it is to be someone’s FP — to be worshipped, blamed, and then erased. To hold all their brokenness and then be told it was never real.

If you’re here doubting yourself, please don’t. You are not crazy. You didn’t cause their dysregulation, and you couldn’t have saved them. You just loved someone who couldn’t love safely — and that’s not your failure. It’s their illness.

You deserve calm, steady love — not the kind that burns you alive to feel seen.
