Should I live in Vancouver for the winter? Requesting Advice!

Trying to decide if I should live in Vancouver for the winter months. Came across a good apartment deal on the west end. Super interested in skiing Whistler, hiking, learning mountaineering / backcountry skiing. One of the problems is that I live far away and probably wouldn’t be able to get my car out there. I have a lot of flexible free time during weekends but work on weekends. Ideally I’d be participating in outdoor activities a few times a week not excluding running / walking.

Is hiking around the area still a popular activity in the winter or are the conditions too harsh? Anyone learned mountaineering while living here?

Is the drive to Whistler doable multiple times in one week? Do locals ever camp in cars for overnight stays or usually only hotels?

Any ideas on if this would be a good fit for me or if you have any transportation ideas?
