C172m downwind/base landing procedure?
ST here, I flew with a new instructor today in a Cessna 172M, who taught that when you are in the pattern and get abeam the approach end of the runway, you put the carb heat on, power back to idle, 10 degrees of flaps, and aim for 80knots.
This is different for me, because with the 8 instructors I've flown with across two flight schools, they all taught me carb heat, power back to 1500 rpm, 10 degrees, and 80knots.
I asked him about it, and he said he just prefers that approach because it doesn't extend the downwind and if he lost an engine he would be able to make the runway. Understandable, but definitely different and one more thing I have to relearn if I keep flying with him.
I couldn't find anything in the POH about this, but a quick online search of flight school websites says that 1500rpm is the norm.
Thoughts?
