GPS Tracking/Stalking - CA
Location: Los Angeles County
Last month I found a cheap amazon bluetooth tracker on my vehicle. This is a vehicle that I had only had outside of my garage for 2 weeks up to that point, before it had been inside for a year. I did a small road trip and was alerted to an unknown tracker that had followed me from home that day.
Unfortunately, I have an idea as to who may have placed it, but without definitive proof I can't make that accusation. When I checked the tracker owner identity in my Safety app on my phone, it showed me a truncated gmail address that is very similar to the email of the individual who I believed placed it.
I filed a report with the sheriff's department (the deputy initially didn't think it was a crime until I told him which code to look up). He then took me seriously, made a report, and took the tracker.
I've waited just short of 4 weeks to follow up, and when I did it turned out they hadn't even assigned it to a sgt - I had to call this sgt and give him my report and my phone number.
So with all of this backstory, my question is - has anyone dealt with the subpoena process on the law enforcement end, and is there some type of time limit on how long this data is retained by google? My worry is because of how much time has passed, that by the time the subpoena reaches google that this information will be gone. The specification for that data is only to retain pairing information up to 25 days after the device has been unpaired (which, I Imagine they would have done seeing the tracker take a trip to the sheriff's dept).
Thank you.
