Here’s my latest find, the Aero Neuchâtel Seven Seas. A cool guy who stood out to me instantly with its charming and unusual style. Finding it in near perfect condition was the cherry on top.

I’ve never heard of Aero Neuchâtel before. I dived a bit into the brand and their history. Aero Watch was founded in 1910 in Neuchâtel, Switzerland. They started with precision pocket watches before inevitably shifting to wristwatches in the mid 20th century. The Seven Seas line appeared at the end of 50s when many smaller Swiss brands were experimenting with automatic, water-resistant models to compete with larger players in the diver watch market. The company was sold to another family, changed hands and they still make beautiful watches under the name Aerowatch.

This watch utilises a Calibre 737 from Cortébert, a company that once supplied high‑end brands. When I searched for “Compressor 2” which is etched on the back of the case, I found a brilliant water resistant case system that was invented back in the 50s by Ervin Piquerez SA. This innovative case back design kept the gasket slightly compressed during everyday wear, ensuring protection while snorkeling or shallow diving. The deeper you went, the tighter the seal became, extending the life of the gasket. This specific patent for the rectangular-case version of the system was unveiled in 1963. Jaeger-LeCoultre Polaris, Longines Diver 7150-1, IWC Aquatimer and Hamilton 600 were some of the examples for this technology.

Aero was never a huge commercial brand like Omega or Longines, but they built characterful watches that reflected the independent watchmaking spirit of the era. I’m planning to learn more about Neuchâtel and their answer to modern design when trends started to change. For someone like me who’s into lesser-known vintage pieces, this was a great reminder that there’s a lot of depth in Swiss watchmaking beyond the big names.
