The parallels between **U.S. sweepstakes casinos** and the **riverboat casinos** of the past just got official recognition from one of the biggest names in the gaming world.

During **Evolution’s Q3 earnings call**, CEO **Martin Carlesund** compared today’s sweeps casinos to the “floating” casinos of the 1980s and 1990s, both operating in **legal gray zones** but thriving wherever regulators haven’t said no.

“We want to supply to them as long as there is no regulatory or authority saying no,” Carlesund said.

# What He Meant

Carlesund drew parallels between **riverboats that could legally operate as long as they were ‘on water’** and **sweepstakes casinos**, which use **dual-currency models** (Gold Coins + Sweeps Coins) to operate legally in most U.S. states.

Both types of gaming:

* Exist in **loopholes between state laws**
* **Adapt quickly** to changing regulations
* **Flourish** wherever oversight is light

# Evolution’s Stance

Unlike **Pragmatic Play**, which exited sweeps casinos entirely, **Evolution** is playing it smart, staying active only in states **without bans or regulatory issues**, such as **Iowa and Ohio**, while exiting markets such as **California, New York, and New Jersey**.

“Sweepstakes is a small part of our total revenue, but we believe it has potential,” Carlesund said.

# The Riverboat Connection

Just like riverboats once “cruised” to stay legal, **sweepstake platforms sail between restrictions,** offering entertainment-based gameplay rather than pure gambling.
But, as Carlesund hinted, “prediction gaming” might be the next frontier - another industry sailing on the edge of regulation
