Award Travel Question

I'm Platinum and using miles to buy a round-trip intercontinental ticket for a Gold passenger. The cost in miles between Economy and Premium Economy is fairly significant (81K vs 343K).

If I buy Economy, will the Gold passenger get automatically upgraded to Premium Economy because of their status?

Or is there another way for me to buy the Economy ticket and upgrade them to Premium, maybe by using Plus Points?
