When Love Feels Like a Mirror: Being in a Relationship with a Narcissist

Being in a relationship with a narcissist doesn’t always start with red flags. Sometimes it begins with fireworks. They make you feel seen, adored, and chosen. But what you don’t realize right away is that their version of love is more like a reflection. You’re not really being loved; you’re being used as a mirror for their own ego.

Over time, the imbalance starts to spill into other parts of your life. At work, you might notice you’re suddenly second-guessing your worth, over-apologizing, or chasing approval from people who remind you of them. With friends, you could find yourself pulling away.. partly because you’ve been trained to prioritize one person’s emotions above your own.

Internally, it’s even more complicated. Narcissists have a way of convincing you that their highs and lows are your responsibility. You start managing their moods instead of your own. Even after they’re gone, the self-doubt lingers... as if their voice set up camp inside your head.

And here’s the tricky part: narcissists aren’t just found in romantic relationships. You can spot traces of them online too.. especially on dating platforms like Doublelist or similar spaces. When scrolling, pay attention to profiles that seem overly polished or too focused on admiration. They often use charming words but avoid showing any real vulnerability. It’s all image.. no depth.

The real healing starts when you stop trying to fix or impress them and start rebuilding the connection with yourself. Because in the end, the love you tried to give them is the love you actually needed to give you.
