Election analysis that no one asked for

Discussion

My rundown on candidates (something no one asked for)

DSA gets two elected

Jivan G. Sobrinho-Wheeler

Ayah A. Al-Zubi

Very surprised by this, but it actually fits with the NYC mayor narrative. Some folks are looking for a major change. Dana Bullister was an excellent candidate but some of the voters are looking for candidates who talk about radical change rather than a data scientist. Time will tell how effective she will be.

Pro Housing Pro Biking incumbents do well

Marc C. McGovern

Sumbul Siddiqui

Burhan Azeem

The only surprise to me is how Burhan underperformed relative to 2023 when he was elected on the second count. My guess is that a lot of his supporters felt that he would win easily and ranked him behind Ayah and Jivan? I think he has been quite effective and well liked so I don't know why he underperformed some

It's good to have a dedicated constituency

Patty Nolan

Denise Simmons

This is a reminder that local politics can be personality based. Both Patty and Denise have very dedicated followers who are much less effected endorsements. Especially with Denise, we should remember that she really represents a populate that is not well represented here on reddit. While you may disagree with her views, I do think that she sincerely represents folks who otherwise don't have a huge voice.

And then there is the CCC

Catherine Zusy

Timothy R. Flaherty

The CCC was always going to get 2 candidates elected. They reliably 25% of the vote and will always get 2 candidates elected. (yes I know that they didn't endorse Flaherty but he certainly got votes from their voters). So, don't be surprised when they do get 2 candidates elected. Would anyone really be happier if Hanratty had been elected instead of Flaherty?

Surprise loser?

Ayesha Wilson

She disappointed the bike safety folks (her positions in the previous election were less clear) and I don't either the pro housing or the anti housing folks trusted her.
