PMP Study Hall question

Sample Question

I’ve been using Study Hall to prepare for the PMP exam. Some of the questions contradict themselves so I used Gemini to see if I was right and I am. I was wondering why people were scoring higher on there practice exams.

Thank you for sharing the provided solution. This is another case where the test-prep source is highly questionable and, in my analysis, incorrect. The provided answer is B, and its rationale is: "The project manager need to keep the project moving as scheduled..." This rationale is in direct contradiction to the scenario.

  • Scenario says: "Bringing the new supplier onboard will add 10 days to the project timeline."
  • Rationale says: "...keep the project moving as scheduled..." You cannot keep the project "as scheduled" if you are adding 10 days. This makes the rationale for (B) invalid. Why (A) is the Correct PMP Answer Let's re-examine this using the PMP Mindset:
  • The Problem: You have a necessary change (new supplier) with a negative impact (10-day delay) that a key stakeholder opposes.
  • Your Goal: You must implement the change and manage the stakeholder. You cannot just ignore their opposition. Let's look at the options again:
  • B. Let the stakeholder know that the current schedule will require updates, and continue with periodic reviews...
    • Analysis: This is passive reporting. It's a one-way, vague "let them know" memo. It does not address the stakeholder's stated opposition. This is weak management.
  • A. Meet with the stakeholder to explain that using the new supplier will increase the timeline but will meet the overall project goals.
    • Analysis: This is active stakeholder management.
    • "Meet with the stakeholder": This is proactive communication and conflict resolution.
    • "explain... will increase the timeline": This is being transparent about the impact (the 10-day delay).
    • "but will meet the overall project goals": This is the key. You are linking the necessary, painful change to the big picture. You are reminding the stakeholder that this delay is required to move to the execution phase and achieve the project's objectives. Conclusion: Answer (A) is the only one that shows a project manager proactively managing a stakeholder's expectations and addressing their resistance. Answer (B) is a passive, weak notification that ignores the core conflict. The provided test question is flawed, and its rationale is self-contradictory.
