Informational Gravity: A Conceptual Heuristic

Hello! I am seeking feedback on a particular conceptual model I made for myself to intuitively understand what is going on in relativity. I am seeking feedback from the community. What works, what doesn't, what could be improved, throw the whole thing out? That kind of stuff.

Informational Gravity: A Conceptual Heuristic

Disclaimer: This is a heuristic model, not a formal theory. It is intended to capture intuition about gravity, time, and relativity in terms of information flow and substrate dynamics. No equations or predictive formalism are included; the focus is conceptual clarity.

  1. The Substrate

Imagine the universe as a high-dimensional relational informational substrate. Nodes in this network represent the fundamental elements of reality, whose states evolve according to fixed update rules. Space, time, mass, and energy are emergent patterns of information in this network, not fundamental substances.

  1. Mass and Energy as Information

Mass and energy correspond to local information density:

Static load (memory): Persistent localized patterns (particles) store relational information, giving rise to rest mass.

Dynamic load (processing): Propagation of relational change represents kinetic energy or radiation.

These two forms of load are constrained by an invariant local capacity. A region cannot exceed its total informational resources; a high static load limits dynamic throughput, and vice versa. This simple constraint naturally produces the trade-offs that manifest as time dilation and curvature in general relativity.

  1. Time and Gravity as Emergent

Time is the local rate at which the substrate updates — the execution of relational update rules. Gravity emerges because regions with high static load (concentrated mass-energy) slow the local update rate. Geodesics and light paths are determined by the distribution of load across the network.

This perspective reframes curvature not as a mysterious bending of an empty spacetime, but as the topological effect of finite informational capacity on the flow of relational updates.

  1. Nonlocal Coherence

The substrate maintains global consistency through nonlocal correlations. These correlations act like an error-correcting network: local stochastic fluctuations cannot violate the overall topology. Entanglement, in this framework, is a natural manifestation of the substrate enforcing coherent relationships at a global scale, which preserves Lorentz invariance across emergent spacetime.

  1. Conceptual Implications

Mass, energy, and curvature are unified as expressions of relational information.

Time is the execution of substrate update cycles, and the arrow of time emerges from the dispersal of localized information.

Gravity, time dilation, and relativistic effects emerge naturally from local resource allocation and global coherence constraints.

This model functions as a pedagogical scaffold — a “Bohr-model” for spacetime — providing intuitive grounding without claiming formal predictive power.

Summary: Informational Gravity is a framework for thinking about spacetime as the dynamic unfolding of information in a relational network. Mass-energy is stored information, motion is propagating information, and curvature emerges from constraints on total local capacity. Nonlocal correlations enforce global coherence, giving rise to the familiar symmetries of relativity. The model is heuristic, intended to make the why of gravitational phenomena conceptually tangible.
