Sewing ripped corduroy seams

Hello! Let me preface this by saying I haven't sewed anything in a good 17 years, although I do have a sewing machine gathering dust in a cupboard. I bought a pair of corduroy jeans vintage shop and they've ripped right down the butt seam, for want of a better term. Given my lack of sewing know how, is it possible to stitch back together myself or should I just save the hassle and spend some money to get them done?
