At what point should I expect a schedule?

Routines

I’m a ftm to a 6-week-old and am really struggling with schedules and routines. I feel naive for thinking things would follow the “feed-play-sleep” pattern, because despite my best efforts, there is just no rhythm to my baby’s needs. I feed, soothe, and respond to her cues, but they don’t seem to lead anywhere predictable. She’ll root after sufficient feedings, yawn when I’m rocking her but refuse to sleep, and wake at totally different times despite us trying to keep a consistent bedtime. Her wake windows vary from about an hour to 3 (or more, somehow?), and her naps can be as short as 15 minutes but never more than 2 hours. She is almost always awake, physically on my body, hungry, and tired, and I’m feeling burnt out trying to make it all work.

My biggest anxiety is leaving the house. I never know when she’ll need to eat or sleep, and she gets extremely fussy when overtired, so even simple outings like the grocery store feel overwhelming. Forget anything scheduled, because how can I ensure that I can comfortably wake and feed her and have enough time to get myself ready to be out the door on time?

Is 6 weeks just too early for any routine at all, or is there something I could be doing differently to help us get there? I worry these long wake windows aren’t good for her, and I’m struggling to manage simple daily tasks like basic hygiene at this point.

Thank you to anyone who’s been through this and has advice or reassurance.
