Husband’s uncle mocking us for simple baby gift list

Rant/Vent

I (23F, 30 weeks pregnant) and my husband (24M) recently put together a short, polite list of baby items we’d love for our baby. Several family members had been asking what we still needed, so we figured it would be easier to just share it in one go.

We worded the message super carefully, it said something like:

“Hi everyone. We’ve put together a list of things we’d love for baby. Please don’t feel any pressure, you’re welcome to get whatever you like, but if you do choose something from the list, we’d really appreciate it 💙.”

It was a small list, maybe 7 or 8 practical things - rocker, weaning set, bottle warmer etc.

Not long after sending it, my husband got calls and messages from his uncle saying that sharing the list was “begging” and that “no one in our family has ever done this before.” He said people will just buy whatever they want and that we shouldn’t have sent a list at all.

At one point, this same uncle said he’d get us one of the items from the list, a sippy cup, which happened to be one of the cheaper things on the list, which is totally fine, I genuinely don’t care what anyone chooses since everyone has different budgets. But in his case, it really felt like he was just being sarcastic and taking the piss. My husband still replied politely:

“It’s ok, only if you want to. Don’t want anyone to think we’re begging.”

Then the uncle replied with:

“Nah don’t worry, my birthday wishlist is getting posted here as well.”

I honestly don’t think he was joking, it felt like a passive-aggressive dig. Like he was mocking us for even making the list. It really annoyed me because (1) we didn’t even direct it at him, (2) it’s none of his business, and (3) we were just trying to make things easier for everyone and avoid people wasting money on duplicates or things we wouldn’t use. We are already limited on storage and physically won’t have space for unnecessary or unwanted items. Not to mention, these are definitely the type of people get offended if we don’t use what they give us.

I’m just so frustrated and I feel insulted because I genuinely thought we were being considerate and doing something normal that most people do when they have a baby. I’m not asking for anything I can’t buy myself. Not just that, but my entire side of the family already happily agreed to buy us everything we wanted, but I wanted to give a fair opportunity to both side of the family.

Is it really that unreasonable to make a polite list when people have literally been asking what we still need? Am I wrong to feel he is mocking us?
