Is it natural or normal for people to stop dating simply because they lost interest?

Just curious about this. I've never been in a love relationship, but someone I know has been in a few and left their last partner because they lost interest. To me, it feels rude or mean to do so, especially if the other person was really interested in staying in the relationship.
