PPI’s made me worse??
For context, I (25F) have zero history with acid reflux or GI issues. This hit me like a truck out of nowhere.
Three weeks ago, after being a fairly heavy binge drinker for 2 years (one month sober this weekend, and planning on staying that way), I got a major acid reflux episode. No actual heartburn, just crazy pressure and tightness in my chest combined with a feeling like I was about to gag/vomit and it was beyond my control. The only thing that helped was walking, weirdly enough, so the three time it flared up bad I spent four hours pacing the house. It was horrible.
I was prescribed pantoprazole, 40mg. The first week of taking it was great—no acid reflux, felt fine otherwise, was avoiding acidic foods and coffee but for the most part, felt fine. Then things got real bad, real quick. Chronic debilitating nausea, zero appetite, dizziness, weakness, lightheadedness, horrible anxiety, panic attacks, headaches, depression/crying spells for no reason, just AWFUL. I spent five days straight in bed and I’ve been working from home because I can’t leave the house.
It dawned on me that I have not had the original problem—acid reflux—in over two weeks. What I DO have is every side effect of pantoprazole. Many people’s experiences online mirror mine. I plan to switch to omeprazole tomorrow and slowly wean off.
Thoughts on this? Has anyone ever experienced something similar? Again, I have never had anything like this in my life—recently did bloodwork and everything is perfect. I appreciate everyone’s input in advance.
