Has being poor become a part of some people's identity?

I grew up extremely poor and now I am much better off financially, but I never identified as a poor person. Being poor to me was just the condition of my life that I was determined to overcome. But today it seems as if some people have latched on to being poor as an identity similar to how some people identify as a particular race or ethnicity and have no intentions of even attempting to better themselves and get out of poverty.
