Changing Grad School Plans and Handling Recommendations
Hey all,
I’m looking for some advice on how to handle a change in my grad school plans. I had originally planned to apply to a MSW program, and I asked 3 professors for letters of recommendation a couple of weeks ago. The applications are due December 1st. I thought I could handle it, but after really considering the costs and time commitment, I’ve realized it’s just not feasible for me. I’m now planning to apply to an MS in a field related to my major, which is more affordable and a better fit.
My questions are: 1. Should I still submit requests for the MSW programs to avoid inconveniencing my references, or would it be better to be upfront now that I may not accept an offer even if I get in? The 2 applications are $100 each, so I’d rather not! 2. For the new programs, I’m asking other references who are more familiar with my work in that specific field. Should I mention to my references the new application to another area? I’m pretty close to these people and it’s at the same college I’m currently doing undergrad, so it seems weird to leave out.
I’d really appreciate any thoughts on the best way to handle this respectfully and professionally!! Thank you!
