Disturbed and rattled by weekend trip, now I can't stop crying when I remember it - but was this a recovered memory, or a created scene?
I'm not that experienced. I am still struggling to fully understand.
For Halloween weekend, I stayed in, prepared for a nice mellow trip. I had all my music set, all the lighting I wanted. Everything was fine. Better than fine actually. Then somewhere in my music, there was some familiar beat or familiar tune that reminded me of being inside my dad's car. Then a loop started with my dad's car, how it looked, smelled, sounded like, and I couldn't stop anything after that point. The whole time, I was panicking and I was begging my own self not to think of "the incident" so of course, that's all I could think of, but just vaguely. I was begging myself on a loop. And then the loop broke. And I went into a photographic memory of what happened that day. Long story short, my dad beat my dumb ass with a belt after I talked back to him and I was 15, way too old to be spanked, let alone whipped so harshly like that. It was a significant trauma for me, but I have since gone to therapy and truly thought I healed from it. He and I reconciled recently too in person and he was in tears as he apologized to me for some of the things he did to me when he was still working, and under a lot of stress. But this scene appeared to me in near photographic perfect memory, almost like I was watching a movie? But I was also there as the character as well, the one being struck, and I felt it in a very distant way, that same pain. That horrifying loop went on for maybe 5 times, and then it went away and - this is the part that confuses me - my mind went to see the "next scene" and it was of my dad in his room at night that night, crying, after what he did. It was extremely vivid, almost like I was looking at him through the doorway.
In reality, I have no idea that this would have happened. After what happened, I only remember crying and going to bed early, but not much else. I know I didn't talk to him or see him again until the next afternoon. I also wouldn't have heard him crying if he did, because our bedrooms are too far apart.
So did I make up this "scene" up entirely? Is it possible I am misremembering my own memory? Did I maybe somehow hear this and my mind filled in the blanks? Or is it more likely a result of wishful thinking? Or maybe an amalgam of some deep wish that he did cry and feel bad that day, and also seeing him teary when we reconciled last year? (for the record, never seen him fully cry or sob in my life.)
I don't know if anyone can really answer this... but I'd love some wisdom. It was a heartbreaking scene and I hate thinking about it but it's still so vivid in my mind, I keep crying. It's not really sadness, but something deeper than that. I really can't think of the word.
