what to do about food aversion
i'm 38/nb/late diagnosis asd-1. i've always been a picky eater but over the years i've opened up myself to trying new things, mostly due to masking/peer pressure but not always in a bad way.
since my diagnosis 3 years ago i've tried to unmask more & live as my authentic self, but i do want to eat more new foods without so much anxiety, especially in social situations.
i have a really hard time with fish in general but especially fishy smells (things like salmon and cod are fine, but things like sushi & thai food are almost always a problem). i don't often stray from my general habits & i tend to get all of my nutrients/proteins but the real struggle is when someone suggests a restaurant with food that i have a hard time with, especially if the place has a strong seafood smell.
i guess my question is, how do i deal with the anxiety around my picky eating habits, and how do i communicate these things to my friends/loved ones? my family has always mocked my mom's side of the family for this (most of them display a lot of autistic traits, although none of them are diagnosed). i want to experience new things but often crippling anxiety over food just keeps me in my own bubble
