Starting to worry about a stubborn respiratory infection, looking for reassurance
35M Nonsmoker Very rarely occasional drinker 135 lbs (160 lbs prior to condition)
Cliffnotes: -No underlying respiratory conditions like COPD -diagnosed with p. aeruginosa respiratory infection -symptoms were present for ~9 months (took a very long time to diagnose) -Prescribed 750mg levofloxacin for 30 days, completed 5 days ago. -Feel much better (80% I'd say), but it's not completely gone. -Treatment was extended for another 30 days.
-Many concerns
Dear Diary version: Last year, I started developing a congested throat, hoarseness, cough, shortness of breath, fatigue. I felt as though something was stuck in my throat all of the time. I also lost a lot of weight, as you can see, and I became very sedentary. At its worst, I couldn't walk from my 2nd floor apartment to my car without getting winded.
The cause of this ended up being a stubborn infection of p. aeruginosa in my respiratory tract, which was found through bronchoscopy. I had these symptoms for many, many months while bouncing around different specialists because this was hard to diagnose (I spent 3 months trying to beat it with acid reflux treatments).
I do not have any underlying respiratory conditions like COPD. My understanding is that this type of infection is abnormal in previously healthy people.
I was prescribed 30 days of 750mg levofloxacin. Within about two weeks my condition improved dramatically, I could breath MUCH easier. I didn't realize how bad it was, I forgot what normal felt like. After the first week, I basically got better every day.
I reached the end of the 30 days, and I would say I am about 80% improved. However, it's definitely not over. I got in touch with the prescribing physician and he is extending the regimen for another 30 days. So that will be a total of 60 days of levofloxacin at 750mg, with a 5 day gap in between two 30 day periods.
I have a lot of concerns. Mainly, they come from googling stuff. I know it can be annoying when a layperson "does their own research" and asks dumb questions and ends up with wild conclusions, I'm a mathematician and we get it too. But in this case, I'm just really worried about this.
Here are my concerns:
-
the "floxed" thing, of course. But statistics are comforting, this isn't something I'm super concerned about.
-
If whatever is left survived 30 days of levofloxacin, could it be resistant? Why not try a different antibiotic?
-
Could there be long term damage from this? My larynx feels absolutely trashed. I can talk again, but it's not quite my normal voice.
-
Does anyone have any theories on how I picked this up? I was previously healthy and fit.
I only found two articles of a similar situation involving this bug, one was due to a VERY contaminated hot tub, that patient died in 9 days, so the applicability is dubious.
The second sounded very similar to what I experienced, down to the included patient's perspective. No slime-hot-tub was involved there, the cause was a mystery there (as it is in my case).
- I'm sorry if anything is unclear, I'm just really worried about this. It was very difficult. I'm feeling much better, but being sick for so long completely disrupted my life and career. Do you have any advice for me, words or wisdom? Should I stop googling this stuff?
Thank you. Just looking to talk about this. Here are the articles I mentioned earlier:
#1 (hot tub) https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC3132318/
#2 (non-hot tub, very similar to my experience) https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC7757453/
