Berlin Marathon Lottery - Why does it ask for CC info?

I am trying to sign up for the 2026 Berlin Marathon Lottery before the end date of Nov 6. I keep hearing that it is free to register and that you only need to pay if selected. If so, why does it ask for your banking info up front? That hasn´t been my experience with other marathon lotteries. Does it actually charge your card?
